The amazing, colour-changing kitten!

Hi, I’m Bruce the cat! I was found on a footpath when I was one day old. Back then I was as small and grey as a mouse.

A few weeks later, when I opened my eyes, they were blue.

When I got bigger, I developed dark points on my paws and face. Lots of people thought I was Siamese!

But then something strange happened.

I got darker…

And darker…

And darker! My fluffy grey fur turned sleek and black.

And then my eyes changed from blue to green.

I’m magic!

But really, there’s a scientific explanation behind my amazing changing colour.

Kittens are born with blue eyes, but most don’t stay that way. At about four weeks old a kitten’s eyes start to change colour, and they don’t settle into their grown-up colour for about three months. (It might be a bit later for me, because I’m a bit of a late developer.)

But what about my coat? Why did I change colour from grey to black?

This not only had me stumped, but also my mum, my dad and my vet! I still haven’t been able to find any scientific information about this, but thanks to the internet I am pretty sure I had a condition known as ‘fever coat’.

According to the internet, if the mother cat is sick or stressed during pregnancy, her kittens can be born with fever coat. Fever coat makes the fur appear lighter than it should be for the first weeks or months of a kitten's life. In my case, I changed colour when I shed my kitten coat.

So there you have it – the answer to the mystery behind my amazing changing colour! If you have any information about fever coat please let me know in the comments.

Hi Bruce. I've already told you what I know about fever coats, which is pretty much nothing-just that stress or illness in the mama may cause it. I don't think it matters, anyway. You have transformed from being a tiny little grey fluff into being an elegant and handsome young man. Perfect as you are.

I have seen kittens like this. Right
now, I have two sisters left from a litter of four originally. They are 16 years old. Their mother was a brown tabby. She died from kidney failure at age 15. One kitten died at birth. The other three, all female, had a white fluffy look, but two were tuxedo cats. One was like Bruce. She is now all black. i named her Dusty because it looked like she had rolled in white dust. The other two also had a wihtish look, which changed to black and white. I still have one of those girls alive. I had seen another cat like this a few years before. i had never hear of fever coat! I will look it up on Google.

Bruce, my little Minnie the Minx is just like you but was grey with white & black. She looked like a baby penguin & people were cooing over her amazing colours when she went to the Vet at 9 weeks old. She had snuffles as a wee kitten when I got her & the Vet saod that Mother cat will have passed this on so mother was sick duribg pregnancy.

Minnie rapidly changed colour and by 12 weeks old she is all black & white. A tuxedo cat.

The litter was all grey of varying tones & one was drak grey with very dark.points. I think that they will all now be black / black & white.

Thx Bruce as I now have an answer to the mystery of the chameleon on Minnie. Incidentally her eyes are pale yelkow with blue rinhs around her pupils.

Very special kitties.
