Blog post by Shamintha Kumar, ‘Bruce Finds A Home’ Digital Content Coordinator Bruce the Cat followers are fascinated by the kitten which changed colour from grey to black within a few months. Fever Coat is a condition that occurs when a pregnant cat falls sick due to an infection, or if the cat is stressed during pregnancy. It can also occur when cats are put on medication by their owners without knowing that their pets are pregnant. Fever Coat appears in kittens because the pigments have not been properly deposited in the fur. This causes parts of the fur to appear silver-grey, cream or reddish as a result. Fever coat remains present for up to 6-8months in newborn kittens but eventually fades away. (Bruce’s coat was completely black by the time he was about four months old.) You can see Bruce's transformation in the video below. Want to see other kittens with fever coat? Black Persian kitten with fever coat Litter of kittens with fever coat Ghost stripes on kitten

He is beautiful! You have rescued a delightful creature and the way you have cared for him is all to your credit. I wish more people were as compassionate and caring as you.

What a precious kitten. I have never heard of fever fur. This answers my question about my cat. I had the same thing happen to mine. When he was a kitten he was colored so beautifully, he looked like a grey siamese, he was a pretty shade of grey with black mask, tail and legs. The people at the vet had never seen a kitten colored this way. As he grew older he lost the gray and turned solid black. He is now has long black with a grey undercarriage. Just beautiful. I had to share my experience after reading Bruce's story.

I had a cat, who turned from gray to black! When she later had kittens, all 4 of them started out, cream colored. They ended up having sealpoint markings! The mother of that cat, who was black, from the start, had another litter of 6 kittens! 3 started out cream colored, and ended up with sealpoint markings! The other 3 started out gray, and soon afterwards, developed black points! Thr latter 3 ended up all black, later!!!

Hi! This was really informative as I was given two 2 week old kittens to foster, as the little girl grew she was silver all over her back like a silver back gorilla. I ended up adopting them and she is a lovely black colour now but I never knew what caused the grey. Both kittens had severe cat flu and were underweight so it is likely mama cat was sick too.

Wow my kitten did exactly this. She was born to a feral cat and was totally bald and grey when born.
