Exclusive interview with Jager the cat

Jager the catMy big sister Jager
I interviewed my big sister Jager! In this world exclusive Jager opens up about her humble beginnings and reveals her favourite (and least favourite) things.

B: How did you end up living with mum and dad?
J: Mum was flatting at the time. Her flatmate’s friend rang up one day to say that a cat had given birth to a litter of kittens under their house. When the kittens were big enough mum went around and tried to coax one out. I was the only one that came out from under the house. Mum put me in a shoebox and took me home.

B: What was it like leaving your family?
J: I was really scared at first but soon mum and I became good friends. The flat we lived in was a villa with a long hallway and mum and I used to chase each other up and down the hall.

B: Where did the name Jager come from?
J: It was a coin-toss between Jager and Sake. Mum was a bit more of a bogan back then. (Jager’s short for Jagermeister, and it also means master hunter – which I am not.)

B: Can you tell me some of your cat tricks?
J: Possibly. What do you want to know?

B: How do you get through the cat flap?
J:
Basically you just have to grow. You are too small to go through the cat flap just yet.

B: Why do you eat my food when your food is actually tastier?
J:
How do you know my food is tastier?

B: I don’t.
J:
That’s not true. I’ve seen you eat it.

B: I was just testing it to make sure it wasn’t poisonous.
J:
That’s why I was eating your food too.

B: How old are you, and have you changed as you’ve gotten older?
J:
I’m over ten years old now. I’ve become a bit smoochier as I’ve grown older.

B: What’s your favourite thing to do?
J:
I really enjoy sleeping under the fern in the garden, but sometimes mum and dad water it while I’m under there because they can’t see me. I also like sneaking into the bed when mum and dad are asleep and making myself ‘the little spoon’. I have noticed you trying to sleep on the bed lately too, and there will be trouble if that continues.

B: What’s your least favourite thing?
J:
Having my tail attacked by annoying kittens.

B: Sorry about that.
J:
You will be.

Put the lime in the coconut

I went outside to get some cocktail ingredients for mum and dad. I found lime, lemons and mint. A good start. I found lavender, gardenias and marigolds. Less delicious, but maybe they taste nice to humans. But try as I might, I could not find any cat nip. Not one single leaf. This is a huge oversight, and I will be writing to the department for the protection of cats for a full explanation.

Is cat racing legal?

Week ten on planet earth, and I reached some pretty big milestones. I weighed 1kg (2lbs)! That meant I was finally big enough to get my first shots from the vet. But I do have one question weighing on my mind. My parents are making me wear a harness outside - do you think they're training me up to become a racing cat?

Who’d call a kitten Bruce anyway?

Bruce the cat AKA BatmanDo you think I look like Batman in this photo?
It was a tempestuous spring day. Mum got caught in a downpour as she walked back from work. When she was a few blocks away from home the clouds cleared and she noticed a tiny ball of fluff on the footpath. Was it a mouse? She bent down to get a closer look and couldn’t believe her eyes. It was me! Bruce the cat! I was only one day old – so young that my umbilical cord was still attached and my eyes were still closed.

There were a lot of things for mum and dad to worry about in those first few uncertain days. But there was one burning question – what were they going to name me?

Mum and dad looked to famous orphans and foundlings for name inspiration. Historical figures Aristotle, Moses and Muhammad were all orphans. But those names all sounded a bit grand for a little cat.

They could have named me after a writer such as Edgar Allan Poe, Tolkein or Tolstoy, or a musician like Ray Charles, Trent Reznor or Bach. They love Ray Charles but they already have a human friend with that name. And for some reason, the name Edgar reminds mum of the word agar, which brings back memories of high school science.

So they decided to go for a pop culture reference. Would I be named after Harry Potter? Tom Sawyer? Quasimodo? Mowgli? Wolverine?

Oliver Twist was a top contender, but in the end they decided to go for Bruce – after Bruce Wayne, the guy who grew up to become Batman! Mum and dad knew I’d need super strength to get over my rough start in life, so they named me after a superhero who grew up big and strong.

So far I’m already following in Batman’s footsteps. I’ve got my own cat cave, I like robins, and I’ve even helped other little kitties in need. (With your support I raised over $1600 for the SPCA.)

Unlike Bruce Wayne though, I have two butlers instead of one.

Now where’s my cape?
